Why LEGO® Building Is More Than Play: STEM Skills Kids Develop Through Building

A LEGO® bridge falls apart.
A child looks at it, moves a few bricks around, and tries again. Maybe the second version holds. Maybe it doesn't. Either way, they're learning to figure out what works.
At Camp Brick, we've seen moments like these spark curiosity, creativity, and confidence for more than 15 years. After working with thousands of children, we know that some of the best learning happens when kids get to experiment, solve problems, and turn their ideas into something they can see and touch.
That's what makes LEGO® building more than play. Through hands-on LEGO® education and STEM challenges, children can explore how things work while having fun along the way.
Building Skills One Brick at a Time
Kids don't need to know all the answers before they start building. In our LEGO® clubs and STEM programs, children learn by doing. They test ideas, make adjustments, and discover new possibilities as they work through challenges.
Here are five important skills they can practice through LEGO® building:
Problem-solving: Figuring out why a structure falls apart, identifying what might be wrong, and deciding what to change.
Engineering thinking: Exploring how gears, pulleys, wheels, and different structures work together to solve a challenge.
Spatial reasoning: Understanding how shapes, sizes, and pieces fit together to create a stable design.
Creativity: Turning original ideas into unique creations and discovering different ways to approach the same challenge.
Collaboration: Sharing ideas, helping classmates, and working toward a common goal.
We've seen how much children can learn when they're given the freedom to try things for themselves. Rather than simply hearing how something works, they can test their ideas, observe the results, and make changes based on what they discover.
And when something doesn't work the first time? That's another opportunity to learn.

Learning Through Real-World Building Challenges
One of the best ways for children to understand STEM concepts is to put them into action.
At one of our partner schools in Colorado, Camp Brick students recently explored bridge engineering through The Three Billy Goats Gruff. Their challenge was to design bridges that would help protect their goats from the troll.
Students experimented with different structures, explored ways to make their bridges work, and shared their creations with classmates.
It was a storybook challenge with real engineering thinking behind it. Children had to consider their designs, test their ideas, and make decisions about how to improve their builds. They also had opportunities to see how their classmates approached the same challenge in different ways.
There Is More Than One Way to Build

Give kids the same challenge, and you'll likely get different results.
One child might focus on building the strongest bridge possible, while another might create a colorful design with extra details and characters. During a Halloween challenge, one builder might construct a spooky haunted house while another creates a moving creature or an entire Halloween scene.
Both approaches give children room to explore ideas, make decisions, and discover new possibilities.
That's why we value opportunities for both guided challenges and independent building. Some children enjoy following a specific problem to solve, while others thrive when they have the freedom to create something entirely their own.
What Makes Camp Brick's LEGO® Programs Different?
For more than 15 years, Camp Brick has helped children discover the joy of building, experimenting, and learning together. Our programs offer different ways for kids to explore LEGO® building and STEM concepts, depending on their interests and the type of experience they're looking for.
Here's a closer look at three of our programs.
On Your Mark, Get Set... BUILD! LEGO® Club
Our flagship LEGO® Club gives children access to hundreds of LEGO® sets, along with a Free Build Zone where their imaginations can run wild.
Kids can explore themed building opportunities or develop their own creations. It's a chance to follow their curiosity, experiment with ideas, and share what they've built with others.
Brick Lab 101: LEGO® Science Club
In our science-focused programs, children use LEGO® Education kits to explore scientific concepts through hands-on experimentation.
Instead of only learning about how something works, they can build models, investigate ideas, and discover concepts through guided STEM challenges. These experiences encourage children to ask questions, test their thinking, and learn through exploration.
Bricks & Gadgets Club
For younger builders who are curious about how things move, Bricks & Gadgets introduces mechanical concepts through hands-on building.
Children explore components such as gears, pulleys, wheels, and axles as they create moving designs and investigate how different parts work together.
Across these programs, children have opportunities to build, experiment, and share their ideas in an engaging learning environment.
And no, kids don't need to be LEGO® experts to join. Whether they're experienced builders or just getting started, they can bring their curiosity and develop new skills as they build.
More Than the Finished Build
A completed creation is exciting, but at Camp Brick, we know the process matters just as much.
Children learn to work through challenges, adjust their ideas, and keep exploring when their first attempt doesn't go as planned. They also get opportunities to listen to others, explain their thinking, and discover that there can be more than one way to solve a problem.

These experiences can help children build skills they can use beyond the classroom, from approaching challenges with curiosity to working with others toward a shared goal.
For families looking for hands-on STEM enrichment in Denver and the surrounding Colorado communities, Camp Brick offers engaging LEGO® clubs and building experiences that bring learning to life. We're proud to help children explore, create, and grow through meaningful play.
